The NCAA Is Protesting NC's Anti-Trans Bill, And The GOP's Response Is Absolutely Insane
You'd think NC losing over $100 million due to being transphobic would humble them. Nope.
Oh, sweet home, North Carolina. What a mess you have become. After the insane HB2 bill passed (which essentially forces trans men and women to have an unnecessarily uncomfortable bathroom visit), people have been canceling on the state left and right.
Now, they may have lost their biggest endorsement to the state, and the GOP's response surely isn't helping.
If you grew up in North Carolina like I did, you would know that the NCAA Tournament is one of the most long-awaited events of the year. There are games, cookouts, parties, concerts, etc. It has to be the single greatest week for the state, for sure (but don't quote me on that). What you can quote me on is the fact that North Carolina is now set to lose over $100 million due to this stupid bill.
The NCAA Tournament announced on Monday that they will be moving all seven of their championship events from North Carolina for the 2016-2017 sports season. They cited their concerns about "civil rights protections" as their main reasoning for the decision.
The NCAA, which has been taking place in North Carolina forever, has policies in place that allow trans men and trans women to play on their appropriate teams according to their reassigned identity. North Carolina - to keep it frank - is f*cking up the process.
“Fairness is about more than the opportunity to participate in college sports, or even compete for championships,” said the NCAA President, Mark Emmert. “We believe in providing a safe and respectful environment at our events and are committed to providing the best experience possible for college athletes, fans and everyone taking part in our championships.”
Simple enough. Well, for everyone who has a functioning brain. For the GOP of North Carolina? Not so much. They pretty much responded by proving that they're incompetent and incapable of grasping simple logic: trans man to a men's restroom; trans woman to a women's restroom. Somehow they managed to flip the issue on to rape and unisex sports? I can't attempt to translate the nonsense. Here's what they had to say in response, via Queerty.
Yeah, they actually called the protest "comical" and brought in "female athletes" as their cushion to fall on. Nice try, but you're still hitting a brick wall.
The NCAA is only following in the footsteps of the giants ahead of it. NC has already lost the NBA All-Star Game, their favorite porn site, the support of countless celebrities from Ciara and Russel Wilson to Beyonce, and even the allegiance of their own ruling government! What more needs to be done for the governing bodies of this state to come to their senses?
2017 looks to be a difficult year for the hating ass anti-gays.
