Your New Fav Rapper Is From Nigeria, Come Worship Princess Vitarah
"There’s a lot of talented artists in Nigeria who are just waiting for someone to blow up..."
Female rap is staying fleeky overseas. Music journalists in the States often focus on the hip-hop of the Western Hemisphere, but a new HBIC over in Africa is winning over our hearts. Meet Princess Vitarah from Nigeria. She's here, she's fierce, and she ain't got time for your trifling man.
Spitting pure fire over a grinding synth line, Vitarah's newest track, "Tell Your Husband," is a delightfully shady ode to your boyfriend who, for some reason, is still looking for side chicks. Vitarah's vocals combine a charmingly affected Brooklyn inflection with a delicious Nigerian accent, and her bars are devastatingly sassy.
Vitarah rose to prominence after her track "Nigerian P*ssy" went viral a few months ago. The song, a loving lady-centric anthem, was praised for its frankness, regional pride, and intriguing vulgarity.
"Everything is real. I don’t take my music as a joke. I take my music really, really seriously," she said in an interview with Okayafrica.com.
"There’s a lot of talented artists in Nigeria who are just waiting for someone to blow up in America and then they’ll open the door for everyone else," she continued. "The same way dancehall and reggae came over. Yeah, that’s my biggest goal."
