A mother who just gave birth was crushed to death in a freak accident on a hospital elevator in Spain. Her husband heard her get cut in half as she lie in a hospital stretcher.
Rocio Cortes Nunez, 25, delivered a baby girl via cesarean section, and she was being transferred to the maternity ward when the incident occurred, the BBC reported. The elevator began to rise unexpectedly on its own, as Nunez was being removed from the elevator. According to Metro, a hospital worker pressed the button to go up one level, but the doors closed and opened twice. He was getting out of the elevator when it started moving and according to Inside Edition, part of Nunez’s body remained outside the elevator doors after the accident.
‘We heard a loud blow in the elevator,” her devastated husband, Jose Gaspar said.
Her new baby was also on the stretcher but was unharmed.
Nunez had two other daughters, ages 5 and 4, The Independent reports.
“This can’t be so,” Gaspar told ABC de Sevilla. “Today it was Rocio, but tomorrow it could be someone else.”
Witnesses said the sight was like something out of a horror movie.
Spanish health officials are investigating the death.
