Brittany Zamora, a former sixth-grade teacher from Arizona arrested last year on suspicions she was having sex with her 13-year-old student, told cops she was afraid of going to jail because the other inmates would “tear me apart,” newly released police bodycam video shows.
The footage, obtained by KPNX in Phoenix, shows the moment Zamora, 28, was taken into custody in Goodyear, as well as her initial interview with investigators.
“I’m little. They’re going to tear me apart,” she sobbed while pondering life behind bars.
After arriving at the police station, a handcuffed Zamora asked an officer, "Can you put my hair in front of my face?” as she approached a pool of reporters who had gathered for her perp walk.
Then, in an interrogation room, an investigator asked her "why it happened," at which point Zamora asked for an attorney.
The former teacher at the Las Brisas Academy Elementary School in Goodyear was arrested after the alleged victim’s parents discovered messages between the two. Documents reveal that Zamora and that victim began chatting in a class chatroom called “Class Craft,” according to a prior KPNX report.
“OMG, I love you,” Zamora allegedly wrote in one text.
“Omg lol you’re so cute baby. I wish you could’ve stayed after with me,” read another alleged message.
Zamora also allegedly sent nudes to the boy. Later, the teen told police that he and Zamora had at least four sexual encounters. In one incident, Zamora allegedly assaulted the boy in her car after a talent show, according to KPNX.
The newly released footage also shows the boys’ parents talk to detectives. His mother explained, “And so my husband just told him, ‘Have you done anything with your teacher? Did you have sex with your teacher?’ And he said yes."
The father lamented that his son’s childhood is “already gone.”
The footage also shows Zamora’s husband defending Zamora to investigators.
“She’s a good person, the best person I’ve ever know,” he said.
The parents filed a lawsuit last month against the school district and Zamora's husband, seeking $2.5 million in damages, claiming that both knew of the allegations for a month before they did, according to Arizona Family.
Before her arrest, the teen’s parents called the teacher in a recorded phone call, according to KPNX. During that conversation, she allegedly apologized and could not explain the abuse.
“I ask myself the same question,” Zamora allegedly told them. “I just got really close after I think everything went down and we’re like, ‘How could that happen?’ … We just got close.”
Zamora has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including felony sexual conduct with a minor and molesting a child. She’s due back in court in May.
