A Clearwater, Florida couple is under arrest on charges they murdered their landlord and then kept her dead body for weeks as they pondered how best to dispose of it. Lawrence Edward Cannon, 42, is facing a first-degree murder charge, while Jennifer Elam, 44, is facing a charge of accessory after the fact to first-degree murder in the death of Mary Ring, 69, according to The Tampa Bay Times.
Police made a welfare call on Ring after neighbors had expressed concern, after seeing Cannon and Elam moving items in and out of the house. “A lot of suspicion been going on,” neighbor Kenneth Howard told ABC Action News. “They’ve been using her car and I haven't seen Ms. Mary in over a week.” He was right to be concerned. Inside the house investigators found Ring’s lifeless body, which had been dead for several weeks.
While forensic investigators collected evidence, detectives questioned Cannon, who was Ring’s tenant. He soon confessed to shooting his landlord in the early hours, following the Super Bowl on February 5. Cannon told police they had spent the last two weeks trying to decide the best way to get rid of her body, but obviously never came up with a viable plan. They were booked into Pinellas County Jail Monday. A motive for the killing and how long the pair lived with Ring is not currently known.
