A Texas mother was arrested after refusing to get her one-year-old son medical treatment for burns on his arm.

The second-degree burns appeared several days old and were discovered during a welfare check Saturday in Tomball, Texas after a concerned citizen noticed what appeared to be a cigarette burn on the child and contacted authorities.

The baby’s mother, 19-year-old Cybil Menard, allegedly told Constable Deputies with Harris County Precinct Four that she was aware of the burns but hadn’t sought any treatment for the injuries. The second-degree burns were located on the baby’s left arm and looked to be several days old.

After being interviewed by deputies who arrived at the scene, Menard allegedly told the authorities that there had also been prior cigarette burns on the child, but she had always refused any medical treatment for those burns as well, according to a statement from law enforcement authorities.

After discovering the untreated burns, deputies contacted child protective services and provided the organization with the details of the alleged abuse. The child was released to another guardian at the location, officials said.

Menard was charged with injury to a child by omission and taken to the Harris County Jail, local station KTRK reports. The pink haired mom appeared to be smiling in the mug shot released by deputies.

After being taken to jail, the 184th District Court set the Texas mom’s bond at $15,000. She was later released after posting the bond, according to the Houston Chronicle.
