A former child bride is suing polygamist leader Warren Jeffs for millions. Wall is suing Jeffs and the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FDLS) over her marriage at age 14 to her cousin. Jeffs presided over the Mormon wedding ceremony. According to a Fox affiliate in Utah, she was also the prime witness in Utah's prosecution of Jeffs on a charge of rape as an accomplice.
At a court hearing Monday, Elissa Wall's lawyers asked the judge to allow Wall to collect a default judgment against Jeffs and the FLDS Church. Neither have responded to Wall's lawsuit. For the past decade, Wall has pursued a personal injury lawsuit. Because of default judgments, she could now potentially collect millions.
Even though Jeffs and the FLDS Church have not responded to the lawsuit at all over the course of the last ten years, the judge said he wanted to give them another, and last, chance.
A summons will be sent to to Jeffs, who is currently serving a life sentence in Texas on child rape charges related to underage marriages.
A VICE report called Jeffs “the deranged leader of North America's largest polygamist sect.” His followers believed he was a prophet and the voice of God.
