A defense attorney is under fire for comments against women he made while defending a rape suspect. "People can be very good at lying," defense lawyer Steve Farese claimed during closing arguments in a Memphis court on Thursday. "Women can be especially good at it because they’re the weaker sex and we ... and we want to protect them and not have anybody take advantage of them, at least I do.”
As USA Today reports, Farese is part of the team defending Mark Giannini, who is accused of raping a woman who came to his home for a job interview. She testified that the businessman choked her, and the next thing she knew, she was at the hospital. Farese and the defense team countered that the sex was consensual and questioned the accuser's criminal background, which includes drug smuggling.
In addition to calling women liars, Farese apparently hinted that the accuser wore revealing clothing during his closing argument.
The comments have been criticized but Farese is unbothered. "My job is not to care if anybody gets offended," he said by phone on Thursday. "Smart people will see it for what it is."
There are 11 women and three men on the jury.
