A New Hampshire mother, who last year fled after she was arrested for allegedly raising her children in a feces-filled “hell hole,” was located and recaptured by police in Florida on Tuesday, The New Hampshire Union Leader reported.
Samantha Grenier, 27, is facing charges of criminal restraint, reckless conduct, and endangering the welfare of a child. She was captured in Florida on a fugitive from justice warrant.
Samantha and James Grenier were initially arrested after police went to the apartment and found two children allegedly living in what they called a “hell hole,” the Union Leader reported. Feces and garbage were strewn throughout the apartment and police could smell the odor from outside the building, they claimed.
The young boy was harnessed to his bed on a mattress covered with urine and feces. His younger sister was shivering and naked in a crib, the mattress also soaked with urine and covered in feces.
James, who didn’t flee in the case, pled guilty to the charges and was sentenced to up to 30 years in prison.
"Why do you even have children in the first place?" the judge said at the time of his sentencing. "You're supposed to love them and protect them and nurture them. You're their father, but instead you tortured them."
The two children are reportedly now living with their grandparents.
