The suspect in the death of a Delaware state trooper was shot and killed by police on Thursday after a long standoff outside the man’s home, The New York Daily News reported.

The standoff had last more than 12 hours as the suspect, who has not been named, barricaded himself in his house, Fox News reported. As police this morning approached his house with an armored bulldozer, the suspect left the home and began firing at police.

Cops returned his gunfire and the man was quickly killed close to 9:30am.

The suspect had allegedly shot and killed state trooper Cpl. Stephen J. Ballard in a Wawa parking lot on Wednesday, after the trooper approached a car containing the suspect and another man, who was arrested at the scene of the crime.

In the standoff outside the man’s home that followed, police severely damaged the house, blowing out the windows and doors using an explosive device. They did not enter the house during their attempted negotiation of the suspect’s surrender.
