A 17-year-old was mistaken for a burglar and was shot and killed in Columbia County, Georgia. According to The Augusta Chronicle, authorities were called at 2:47 am Saturday about a burglary in progress. They found Jordan Middleton dead in the foyer from a gunshot to the chest.

Middleton was reportedly invited to the residence, per a statement from Columbia County Sheriff Maj. Steve Morris, by a 14-year-old girl. It was the girl's father, Derrick Fulton, who heard noises and thought the home was being robbed. He claims that he identified himself as armed and asked the burglar to identify himself. He heard nothing and when Middleton ran out of a closet, the father reacted and shot him in the chest.

Charges have not been filed.

According to WRDWstudents at Grovetown High School held a vigil in honor of Middleton.
