Zebb Wayne Quinn went missing on January 2, 2000 after working a shift at Walmart in his hometown of Asheville, North Carolina. He was 18 years old and had just finished his shift in the electronics department of the store at 9 p.m. After work, he had plans with his coworker and friend Robert Jason Owens.
Robert told Zebb that he knew of a car for sale. Zebb was actively looking for a new car at the time. The two met up in the Walmart parking lot before driving separately to look at the vehicle. The two men were caught on surveillance footage at a gas station nearby at around 9:15pm, buying sodas.
According to Robert, after leaving the gas station, Zebb flashed his headlights, signaling for Robert to pull over. Zebb said he got paged and needed to make a call. According to Robert, Zebb made a call from a pay phone, according to an ABC affiliate. After the call, he claimed Zebb was "frantic" and that he told Robert that he would have to look at the car later. He then sped off, rear ending Robert’s truck. Hours later, Robert was treated at a hospital for fractured ribs and a head injury that he said he sustained in a second, supposedly unrelated car accident that he was involved in that evening. He did not file an accident report with police.
Several days later, Zebb’s Mazda Protege was found in a restaurant parking lot nearby. And the condition of the car was downright bizarre! Its headlights had been left on and a live puppy was inside. To make things even stranger, on the car’s back window: a drawing of a pair of lips and an exclamation mark in pink lipstick. The driver’s seat was adjusted for somebody considerably smaller than Zebb.
Not long after the car was found, police suspected foul play and began investigating the disappearance as a homicide.
In 2015, Robert was hired to do construction work on the home of Joseph and Cristie Schoen Codd in Leicester, North Carolina. They went missing and were found several days after Robert was arrested for their murder. Cristie was a contestant in the eighth season of the Food Network series Food Network Star. She was pregnant when she was killed. He plead guilty to killing and dismembering them, CBS News reported. He claimed he ran them over by accident while on painkillers and then panicked.
In 2017, nearly 17 years after Zebb disappeared, Robert was indicted for murdering him. He is currently awaiting trial. He is already serving up to 74 years for killing the Codd family.
