Boyfriend Allegedly Murdered 21-Year-Old Mother Of Two

A 21-year-old mother of two was fatally shot in Texas over the weekend and her boyfriend has been charged with murder.

Megan Ficklen’s mother, Deanna Hern, never liked her daughter’s boyfriend, Anthony Castellanos.

“There was something about him that just wasn’t right,” she said in an interview with local station ABC-13.

If the allegations against Castellanos, 21, are true, then Hern's concerns were well founded. Authorities responded to reports of a shooting at a home in San Leon, Texas and found Ficklen critically injured, Galveston County sheriff Henry Trochesset told PEOPLE.

Hern alleged that her daughter had been “trying to get away” from her boyfriend when he pulled a gun, shooting her three times in the back, ABC-13 reports. She was rushed to a hospital, where she died.

Later that day, deputies tracked down Castellanos in Houston, where he was arrested, The Galveston County Daily News reports. He has been charged with murder and is being held on $400,000 bond, according to inmate records.

Hern remembers her daughter as a warm, caring person who loved to take care of stray animals.

“She’d find a stray dog or cat and she would put in a box and drive it around in her car until she could find a home for it,” Hern recalled to ABC-13. “She was a beautiful girl, inside and out, with a huge heart.”

Ficklen’s family has created a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses. It has raised around $4,500 as of Tuesday afternoon.

It is unclear whether Castellanos has an attorney who can comment on his behalf.
