Britney Spears is under investigation after an employee claimed that she “struck them during a dispute” at the pop singer’s home, according to authorities.
Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. Eric Buschow confirmed to People that Spears is a suspect in an alleged misdemeanor battery incident on Monday.
The employee told authorities that the 39-year-old “struck them during a dispute” on Monday, Buschow said.
But those in Spears’ camp have disputed that claim. An unnamed source close to Spears told People that Spears “didn’t hit anyone.”
“The housekeeper was holding her phone and Britney tried to knock it out of her hands,” the source said.
Spears’ attorneys also denied a physical altercation between the pair in a statement to Fox News.
“This is nothing more than sensational tabloid fodder—an alleged misdemeanor involving a ‘he said she said’ regarding a cell phone, with no striking and obviously no injury whatsoever,” the statement said. “Anyone can make an accusation. This should have been closed immediately.”
Buschow declined to release additional details about the incident but said the sheriff’s office investigation will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office, who will decide if any charges will be filed.
The incident started, according to TMZ, after the housekeeper returned from taking one of Spears’ dogs to the vet and the two argued about issues with treatment of the pet.
As they argued about the dog’s wellness, the housekeeper alleged the singer slapped the phone out of her hands.
Spears appeared to have put the incident aside by Thursday when she posted a series of topless photos and videos of herself on Instagram.
In one, she is wearing red boots and white bikini bottoms with her hands carefully placed over her chest.
“There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of the people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age,” she wrote, sharing the Sophia Loren quote.
Last week, Spears’ father, Jamie, announced that he would step down from serving as her estate conservator as soon as a plan for the transition was put into place.
The decision was seen as a victory for Spears, who has been trying to remove him from the post in recent years.
