Police have made an arrest in the shocking murder of a Houston elementary school teacher.

The Sugar Land Police announced that Charvas Thompson, 26, was arrested in Shreveport, Louisiana on Wednesday for the Saturday murder of Wendy Duan, 28.

Police had been called to Duan's home in the New Territory developed west of the city at 9:50 p.m. on Saturday night in response to neighbors' reports of gunshots, Oxygen.com previously reported.

They found Duan in her backyard with multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Duan lived alone and police now say that there was no one else in the house when officers arrived.

Witnesses allegedly told police that they overheard an argument before the shooting.

"Detectives quickly identified Thompson after interviewing witnesses at the scene, reviewing nearby video and confirming his vehicle from license plate recognition cameras in the area," they wrote in their release.

They say the two had only been dating for a week before they had an argument on Saturday and Thompson allegedly shot Duan to death.

Though police had not previously released his name, they said they had determined the shooting was a domestic violence incident and knew who he was. Police said on Thursday that an arrest warrant was issued on Sunday morning for murder and his bond was set at $500,000.

Thompson is currently being held in the Caddo Parrish Correctional Center awaiting extradition to Fort Bend County, Texas, according to jail records reviewed by Oxygen.com.

At the time of Duan's murder, Thompson was out on bond in Harris County — which encompasses Houston — according to court records reviewed by Oxygen.com. He was arrested on May 1, 2022 for assault on a female family member with whom he lived. She received an order of protection in the case. He had been due back in court on Jan. 23 for a disposition hearing.

He had previously been arrested in Harris County in May 2018 for allegedly stealing two jackets from a Macy's, according to court records reviewed by Oxygen.com. He pleaded guilty/nolo contendre and received a deferred adjudication in that case, which he discharged in August 2019.

Duan had been a third grade reading and language arts teacher at Boone Elementary School in Houston, part of the Alief Independent School District in southwest Houston, since 2017.

"We are deeply saddened to learn about the tragic passing of Alief ISD employee Wendy Duan," the district said in a press release obtained by Houston CBS affiliate KHOU. "Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time."

Her neighbors expressed sorrow at her passing.

"It's very sad about that because she's very young and vibrant," Thomas told KHOU. " We're all very sad about it."
