Man Claims That Dismembered Girlfriend, Who Was Found In Fridge, Went In 'On Her Own'
Daryl Jones claimed that Kristy Jefferson, who was found dismembered and decomposing in a fridge placed in the hallway by his apartment, climbed into the appliance "on her own."
A Pennsylvania man whose girlfriend was found dismembered and decaying in an abandoned refrigerator by his apartment has claimed that she went into the appliance all by herself.
Before walking into the courtroom to attend motions hearing on Tuesday, a shackled Daryl Jones, 43, told WPXI that he did not kill his girlfriend Kristy Jefferson, 38.
Reporter Gabriella DeLuca asked him, “Did you put her into the refrigerator?”
He replied, “She went in on her own.”
Residents at an apartment complex in McKees Rocks — a northwest suburb of Pittsburgh — had noticed an unpleasant smell coming from an unplugged refrigerator left in a hallway about 20 feet away from Jones’ apartment, the Allegheny County Police Department previously stated in a news release obtained by Oxygen.com. Those residents then discovered Jefferson’s decomposing body inside of the fridge, the door of which was facing the wall of the hallway. Jones' body had been partially dismembered.
The grim discovery occurred in May o2020, just days after the mother of four was reported missing.
Investigators charged Jones with both homicide and abuse of a corpse, Trib Live reported.
On Tuesday, Jones’ defense asked the judge to throw out the homicide charges in the case, according to WPXI. The request came after a doctor with the medical examiner’s office testified that they could not determine Jefferson’s cause of death.
Jones and Jefferson were in a relationship, and neighbors reported overhearing the them fighting regularly, according to a criminal complaint obtained by KDKA. Charlene Jefferson, Kristy’s mother, told investigators that her daughter said Jones had tried to suffocate her with a pillow days before she died, according to a complaint obtained by Trib Live. She claimed that Jones had been “extremely abusive” toward her daughter for years, according to the complaint. She also detailed previous incidents of alleged violence committed against Kristy, including an allegation that Jones had kicked her daughter in the head and strangled her.
Jefferson’s death left her four children, who were all under the age of 18 at the time, without a mother, KDKA reported in 2020.
