Victims Of Golden State Killer Get To Face Him In Court

A man who was tied up at gunpoint by the Golden State Killer over four decades ago has proposed a “fantasy sentence” for the serial killer.

Bob Hardwick and his wife, Gay, were woken up inside their Stockton home by Joseph DeAngelo shining a flashlight into their eyes on March 18, 1978.  He tied them both up before blindfolding and repeatedly raping Gay.

Forty-two years after the heinous attack, the couple faced the killer on Wednesday as part of three days of victim impact statements at DeAngelo's sentencing. DeAngelo admitted responsibility in June for harming 87 victims at 53 separate crime scenes which span 11 California counties in a plea deal that allowed him to dodge the death penalty.

After he and his wife spoke about how DeAngelo’s crimes affected their lives, Bob explained to the Sacramento courtroom that he was a fan of fantasy sports. He offered a recommendation for the court.

“I have a fantasy sentence for Mr. DeAngelo,” he said, addressing Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Michael Bowman. “The fantasy sentence is  and I know the court can’t do this or grant this wish but this is my fantasy sentence  that Mr. DeAngelo be incarcerated in the toughest prison in the state with the worst of inmates.”

That’s just the tip of the iceberg of his “fantasy sentence.”

“At least three or four nights a week, magically, inmates can gain access to his cell,” he suggested. “He [DeAngelo] can be awakened in the night by masked inmates with a bright light pointed in his face so that he cannot realize what is going on.”

Bob said those inmates would be carrying prison-made shanks in his fantasy. They also had to be masked so that DeAngelo would be unable to know who is attacking him and therefore suspicious of anyone who tries to befriend him in the prison.

“Mr. DeAngelo would be bound, blindfolded, stripped, and forced to lay on a cold cell floor for a period of two to three hours,” Bob continued. “His attacker or attackers would repeatedly rape him like these women were raped and then between the attacks these rapists would sit there and have a cold drink.”

He specified that his fantasy attacker or attackers could snack on their favorite sandwich or perhaps drink a Dr. Pepper, a drink he knows DeAngelo likes. DeAngelo would often would take breaks during his attacks to calmly raid his victims' fridges. He'd drink their beer and snack on their food supply.

During these fantasy attacks, Deangelo should be threatened with death, Bob specified.

“I would want Mr. DeAngelo to suffer for the rest of his life like his rape victims have suffered for the past 42 years,” he said.

Bob closed his impact statement on the following note: “To future inmates of Mr. DeAngelo, if you are listening, please remember what I said. Thank you.”

In a continuation of Tuesday's victim impact statements, victims and survivors again taunted DeAngelo on Wednesday. They addressed him as "weak" and "powerless" and "worthless scum."

Bowman is expected to give a sentence to DeAngelo on Friday. He is expected to give the serial killer life behind bars without parole.
