A Florida man charged with fatally stabbing his daughter told local reporters that the killing was unintentional.

Laurence Green, 51, was charged with manslaughter after authorities say he stabbed Sidney Green, 22, shortly after 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Clearwater Police Department. Police say the victim was attempting to break up a fight between her boyfriend and her father at the Bay Cove Apartments when she was injured.

"The victim, who is the [defendant’s] daughter, attempted to intervene in the physical altercation, at which time, the [defendant] had a kitchen knife in his hand," according to charging documents. "Upon the [defendant] attempting to stab the victim’s boyfriend, the victim jumped in between them and was stabbed by the [defendant]."

According to ABC Tampa affiliate WFTS-TV, Sidney Green sustained a wound to the stomach. She died shortly after being transported to Morton Plant Hospital.

Laurence Green signed a written statement in which he allegedly admitted to taking the knife from the kitchen. He claimed his daughter’s boyfriend “had begun punching him in the head” when Green attempted to “stick him” with the knife.

Green was booked into the Pinellas County Jail, where he spoke with WFTS-TV reporters to talk about the domestic incident.

"It wasn’t meant for her," said Green. "Like I said, she jumped in the way, and it wasn’t meant for her."

Green explained his daughter and her boyfriend had been in an on-again-off-again relationship for years, according to the local outlet. Green visited the apartment to retrieve his clothes when he found the boyfriend at the residence.

"I said, 'You got three minutes to get him out of this house,' and she wouldn’t get him out of the house," Green continued.

Preliminary reports show that Green acted in self-defense when he attempted to stab the boyfriend, Clearwater Police Major Natalia Illich-Hailey told reporters.

Sidney Green’s long-time friend created a GoFundMe page, posting updates on behalf of the family — including Sidney’s brother and sister.

“Sidney was the kindest person,” the organizer wrote on behalf of the victim’s mother. “She was always putting others before herself. She was passionate, smart, courageous, and fearless.”

“Sidney was a light,” Green continued to the Tampa outlet. “She can make everyone smile and make everyone happy. I want people to remember that about her. Regardless of what happened, I want people to remember that about her that she was a good person.”

Jail records show Green is currently being held on $20,000.
