'We Believe He's Not That Evil:' Maya Millete's Family Hopes Suspect Husband Will Lead Cops To Her Body

The family of Maya Millete hopes that her husband will have a change of heart and admit to the murder of the mother of three, so they can recover her remains.

Larry Millete was arrested last week for the killing of Maya “May” Millete, 39, who vanished the same day she scheduled an appointment with a divorce lawyer. The San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan alleged at a press conference last week that he killed her at their Chula Vista, California home in January. Stephan pointed to the divorce lawyer appointment as the catalyst for the alleged murder. Maya’s remains have yet to be found.

However, her family has hopes that Larry will lead investigators to her remains so she can be laid to rest.

"We're praying he'll do it for his kids, that he'll let them know where mommy is," her sister Maricris Drouaillet told Fox News on Monday. "We believe he's not that evil and hopefully he'll have a change of heart."

So far though, Larry vehemently denied any involvement in his wife’s disappearance or presumed murder. He has pleaded not guilty to murder and last month claimed that Maya “voluntarily” left him and their three children. He alleged in a petition, intended to keep their three kids away from her side of the family, that she had been acting “erratically” before her disappearance and that "there is no evidence of foul play.”

Larry also stopped cooperating with police soon after his wife’s disappearance, a public information officer for the department told Oxygen.com back in February.

Stephan said last week that Larry that authorities believe became irate after learning Maya’s call to a divorce attorney. She said that Maya had wanted to co-parent with Larry while separating from their “toxic relationship.”

“But Larry would not have it,” she alleged.

Stephan commended Maya's devotion to her three young children. She was planning one of her children’s birthday parties for Jan. 10 when she vanished.

“They were the center of their life," Stephan said.

Larry is also being charged with the illegal possession of an assault weapon. Police had filed a gun violence restraining order request against him back in May, claiming that he was in possession of "illegal assault weapons and unregistered firearms," posing an "extreme danger to the public in both the cities of Chula Vista and San Diego.” Guns were seized from Larry's home as a result of that request.

Currently, searches are underway to locate the missing mother's remains. Drouaillet told Fox News that the searches have been focused on areas that Larry and Maya visited two to three hours from Chula Vista. During the press conference last week, Stephan noted that Maya's remains could be a few hours away from the former couple's home.

"Now that the DA's office gave us a little more specific area to search, we are all fired up," Drouaillet said. "It gave us hope that we'll be able to bring her home."
