It was certainly a different way to ring in the new year.

Eschewing the customary toasts and celebrations that millions of people across the United States shared as we all embark on a new decade, an Oregon woman found herself beginning 2020 by posing for quite the mugshot as she was being booked on a domestic assault charge for allegedly beating her boyfriend after he left her dog out in the rain.

At a little after 6 p.m. on New Year's Eve, deputies were called to a home in Myrtle Point after receiving an assault complaint, the Coos County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release posted on their Facebook page.

When the sheriff's deputies arrived, the complaining party explained that his girlfriend "had punched him in the face," authorities said.

The deputies then “observed a marble sized welt and a scratch mark" on the right eyebrow of the alleged victim, according to the press release. The man told them that he was talking to his girlfriend when she punched him twice in the face.

Investigators located the victim's girlfriend, 38-year-old Melissa Sue Morris, inside the home and spoke to her.  She allegedly admitted to punching her boyfriend, but offered up an explanation –– he'd "left her dog outside in the rain," she told authorities.

The deputies arrested Morris and brought her in for a booking photo, where she flashed a toothy grimace.

It is not clear if Morris has an attorney who can speak on her behalf at this time.
