A New Jersey teenager has been accused of stabbing his mother to death in a parking lot, all while his younger brother watched the horrific scene play out.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced Tuesday, January 14 that Edgar Diaz, now 18, will be charged as an adult for the August 7, 2019 slaying of his mother, Margarita Diaz, 44, according to a press release obtained by Oxygen.com.

“The defendant, Edgar Diaz, was 17 years-old at the time these crimes occurred. Today, Edgar Diaz voluntarily waived jurisdiction of the Family Court to Criminal Court, and will be prosecuted as an adult,” Billhimer said.

Edgar is accused of stabbing his mother with a knife and slamming her head into the pavement outside their parked vehicle at the Deer Chase Professional Park, an office park in Toms River.

“All of this was done in the presence of the defendant’s younger brother,” the release said.

Toms River Police were called to the scene at approximately 8:42 p.m. that night and discovered Margarita unresponsive. Emergency responders tried to perform lifesaving measures, but Margarita was later pronounced dead at an area hospital, prosecutors said.

Edgar has been charged with murder in his mother’s death and is also facing charges of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, and endangering the welfare of a child.

He has been held at the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center since his arrest on August 13.

The investigation was conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Toms River Township Police Department and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
