Authorities are searching for a Texas man who allegedly abducted and then gunned down his pregnant girlfriend last month.

An arrest warrant was issued for 25-year-old Kwanmaine Travion Boyd this week, who has been charged with capital murder in connection with the fatal shooting of his girlfriend Cavanna Smith, 25, according to the Houston Police Department.

On Oct. 6, police responded to a shooting at 800 Reid Street — just outside Houston's Loop in the north of the city — shortly before 7 a.m. and found Smith lying unresponsive in the street. She’d been shot in her right cheek, according to a criminal complaint obtained by Oxygen.com. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her death was subsequently ruled a homicide.

People who witnessed the shooting from their cars told police they heard a man and woman arguing, followed by a gunshot. One witness told detectives that Smith then “immediately collapsed."

Boyd, who was later identified as the shooter, was allegedly seen fleeing the area in an older model white Ford or Chevrolet pickup truck with a black right quarter panel. Surveillance footage corroborated witness statements, according to police.

Investigators also later determined a white 2011 Chevrolet Z71 pickup truck was registered in Boyd’s name. He was charged with murder on Nov. 9.

According to medical records, Smith was four and a half months pregnant at the time she died, charging documents stated. The 25-year-old had a fetal ultrasound conducted a day before her death, police said.

Investigators suspect Smith told Boyd was pregnant with his child shortly before the shooting. After conducting a search of Boyd's Houston home, police located a greeting card from Smith in his bedroom drawer, alerting him to the news.

“Kwan, I know this isn’t what we expected but WE ARE expecting!!!” Smith wrote in the note addressed to Boyd, which was dated Oct. 3, the complaint stated.

Next to the greeting card, police found two positive pregnancy tests and an ultrasound of the couple’s child.

A sporting goods store receipt for a nine millimeter pistol and ammunition was also seized from the bedroom drawer, according to charging documents. Surveillance footage, obtained thereafter, showed Boyd making the purchase. The purchase also included several rounds of .45 caliber grade ammunition, which police say match the shell casings found at the scene of the shooting. No firearms were located at the residence.

An official motive in the slaying hasn’t been released.

However, Smith indicated in text messages prior to her death that Boyd may have initially kidnapped her over a financial dispute.

“He got my money and don’t wanna give it to me,” Smith wrote a friend, just minutes before she was shot, the criminal complaint alleged.

Authorities haven’t released additional information regarding the investigation. A spokesperson for the Houston Police Department declined to comment on the open case when contacted by Oxygen.com on Tuesday.

Boyd has an arrest record number dating back to 2015, which includes aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, marijuana possession and evading arrest, according to additional online court records.

Houston lawyer Edward Okwueze, who represented Boyd on a dismissed aggravated robbery charge in 2018, didn’t respond to Oxygen.com’s requests for comment on Tuesday.

Authorities are urging anyone with additional information pertaining to Boyd’s whereabouts to call Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
