A Maryland woman accused of shooting her husband claims that she did it because he had been molesting children at her daycare.

Shanteari Weems, 50, of Randallstown is accused of shooting her husband on Thursday evening at the Mandarin Hotel in southwest Washington D.C., according to a press release from the D.C. Metropolitan Police.

Police were called to the hotel at 7:40 pm and “upon arrival, members located an adult male, inside of a hotel room, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.”

He was transported to a local hospital to be treated for “life-threatening injuries" but thus far has survived the shooting.

“The detectives’ investigation revealed that this offense was domestic in nature,” the press release states.

Weems briefly barricaded herself inside the hotel room before she was arrested, according to WTOP. A half-hour long standoff ensued while Weems allegedly both kept her injured husband from getting medical attention and threatened to kill him during that standoff.

Weems, who runs a daycare center in Owings Mills, Maryland has been charged with assault with intent to kill.

She has claimed that her spouse had been molesting children at her daycare center, Lil Kidz Kastle. She allegedly told police that teachers, children and parents have all come to her with claims that he molested several children.

“When police approached the room in which the shooting took place and asked Weems if someone had been shot inside, Weems responded, ‘F--- him, he's a child molester,’ court documents obtained by WJLA reports.

Her husband of five years, who has not been named, is a retired Baltimore City police officer, WTOP reports.

"I can tell you that Baltimore County detectives are currently monitoring the recent developments in Washington D.C. Due to the sensitive circumstances leading up to this incident, the Baltimore County Police Department continues to support the families impacted,” the Baltimore Police announced in a statement. “As this investigation moves forward, the daycare facility located in Owings Mills remains closed."

The allegations made by Weems have apparently garnered her support and sympathy. A GoFundMe account called "Support for Shanteari Williams" raised more than $3,000 by Sunday, WTOP reports. The account has since been removed by GoFundMe, which has a policy against using the platform to raise money for criminal defenses.

It’s not clear if Weems has an attorney. She has also been charged with possession of an unregistered firearm, possession of unregistered ammunition and other gun-related charges.

A preliminary hearing originally scheduled for Monday has been moved to Friday, Fox 5 in Washington D.C. reports.
