Two men were placed under arrest in connection to a missing teen whose disappearance has captivated a nation since 2007.

Andrew Gosden was 14 years old when he boarded a train from Doncaster, England, to London on Sept. 14, 2007, according to the South Yorkshire Police. Andrew’s last known whereabouts were captured on surveillance camera when he arrived at London’s King’s Cross station.

British police arrested two London men in connection to Andrew’s disappearance on Dec. 8, 2021, police announced on Tuesday. An unnamed 38-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of kidnap and human trafficking, while an unnamed 45-year-old was arrested on the same charges plus possession of indecent images of children.

Both men were since “released under investigation while enquiries continue” and not formally charged with any crime, prompting renewed attention on the cold case.

“Our priority at this time is supporting Andrew’s family while we work through this new line of enquiry in the investigation,” said Detective Inspector Andy Knowles in the announcement. “We are in close contact with them and they ask that their privacy is respected as our investigation continues.”

Police confiscated the suspects’ electronic devices, which “could take six to 12 months” to analyze, police said, according to the BBC.

On Tuesday, Andrew’s father, Kevin Gosden, tweeted a statement regarding the announcement.

“We understand that police investigations will take several months to complete,” said Gosden. “So until that is the case, we do not know what to think and do not wish to speculate on any possible outcome.”

Andrew left his South Yorkshire home and withdrew the last of his funds (amounting to around $275 U.S.) before purchasing a one-way ticket to London. There has been no trace of him since.

European media outlets have helped keep the teenager’s case in the spotlight, highlighting numerous search efforts over the years. In 2011, the Gosden family hired a private firm to utilize sonar technology to search the Thames River. The Gosden family devoted themselves to the cause, making frequent appearances on TV and radio and putting up missing person flyers all over England, as listed on their website.

“We have carried the burden of not knowing for many years, and recent potential developments represent a more intensified period of this emotional journey for us,” Kevin Gosden continued in his statement. “So we hope that you understand how difficult this time is for us as a family and wish to thank you for your support and prayers.”

Andrew was last seen wearing a black Slipknot tee and black jeans. He requires strong prescription glasses or contacts. He has a unique double ridge to his right ear and is deaf in his left ear. Several age-progression composites have been created and circulated thoroughly in the media.

Today, he would be 28 years old.
