A pregnant mother in Georgia was killed while trying to protect her toddler son, shielding him from an onslaught of bullets outside the family’s home.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department received a call of shots fired outside an apartment complex in Anthens Monday night.  When they arrived to the scene, they found Auriel Callaway, 24, with a gunshot wound, according to police. Her toddler son was with her. He wasn't hurt.

Callaway was transferred to a nearby hospital where she died. Her unborn child also died. The baby was due to be born in December.

The violence reportedly erupted after a group of people got into an argument outside of the apartment complex where Callaway lived.

Callaway’s sister Standria Walker told Atlanta outlet WSB-TV that as the argument escalated, Callaway tried to bring her 3-year-old son, Mason, into the apartment building. She said she ran with him.

"She said, 'I'm fixing to go, y'all. I'm taking my baby in the house," Walker said.

However, shots rang out before she got inside. The mother shielded her son resulting in her own death.

"She got hit with her son in her arms, and she's pregnant," Walker told WSB-TV. "That's my only sister. They took our baby away from us."

Athens-Clarke County police information officer Geof Gilland said at a press conference that police have obtained search warrants for several residences at the apartment complex.

“Multiple individuals were detained for investigative purposes,” he said, adding that they are “not necessarily suspects” and that they could be either witnesses or persons of interests.

“She was beautiful," Walker told WSB-TV of her sister. "She had a heart of gold. She would give when she didn't have it. All she cared about was her son. I want y'all to know you took away a mother, a sister, a daughter."
