Canadian rapper Jon James McMurray fell to his death in British Columbia on Saturday while filming a video on the wing of an airplane.

McMurray, an avid stuntman and former professional skier, was reportedly filming a project that he’d been working on that involved rapping while walking on the wing of a small airplane when the situation turned deadly, despite McMurray having trained “intensely” for the risky stunt, according to a statement from his management.

“However, as Jon got further out onto the wing of the plane, it caused the small Cessna to go into a downward spiral that the pilot couldn't correct,” the statement read. “Jon held onto the wing until it was too late, and by the time he let go, he didn’t have time to pull his chute. He impacted and died instantly.”

McMurray was pronounced dead at the scene, and the situation remains under investigation, according to a statement released by the Vernon North Okanagan Royal Canadian Mounted Police that does not refer to McMurray by name. No one else was injured during the incident, Barb McLintock, a spokesperson for the British Columbia Coroners Service, confirmed to The Canadian Press.

McMurray was 34 years old at the time of his death and is survived by his wife, Kali James, his parents, Doug McMurray and Jen McMurray, and his brother, Jarred McMurray.

The late rapper’s management team described McMurray in their statement as an “incredibly passionate person” who was “always smiling.”

“He filled everyone around him with positivity, and never spoke poorly about another person. He truly had a heart of gold,” their statement read. “Jon would want to be remembered as a beacon of light to follow your dreams, and would want everyone to continue to be inspired through his music and life message.”
