Dramatic Video Captures Spring Breakers Thwarting Armed Robbery Attempt

“Then my cousin, Jacob, gets on top of him and I’m in there, trying to wrestle around for the gun,” Aric Wisbey said after a man tried to hold up the group of four at a gas station in Oakland Park, Florida.

Spring breakers stop attempted robbery

A group of cousins on a spring break trip to Florida thwarted an attempted robbery by wrestling an armed gunman to the ground, and fending the would-be robbers off with the weapon.

The dramatic early morning exchange was captured on surveillance footage at an Oakland Park gas station, where the group stopped to get gas around 3:45 a.m. Sunday morning, according to WBPF.

The four men, who were visiting Florida from Indiana, can be seen pulling into the Mobile gas station in a blue vehicle. The men get out of the vehicle and begin to pump their gas, when another man parked at nearby pump hops out of a black car and approaches the men with a gun in his hand.

Alex Wisbey, a recent graduate of Ivy Tech Community College in Indiana, and Aric Wisbey told WPLG the man demanded money but the vacationing cousins weren’t about the surrender easily.

“Then my cousin, Jacob, gets on top of him and I’m in there, trying to wrestle around for the gun,” Aric told the station.

As the gunman is thrown to the ground, a shirtless accomplice runs in to try to help, but Aric Wisbey was able to get the loaded gun and point it at both suspects, who got back into their car and drove away.

“It turned out the best way possible for us,” Aric Wisbey said, adding that he and Alex each have concealed weapons permits in Indiana and were experienced in handling firearms.

Broward County Sheriff’s deputies said the driver of the getaway car, Kevin Campbell, 33, was later arrested and charged with armed robbery and resisting an officer for his role in the attempted robbery.

Authorities are still searching for the gunman and urge anyone with information to contact investigators.
