A 37-year-old woman has been arrested after a newborn was found dead on an airplane. According to Business Insider, cleaners found the body of a newborn wrapped in a plastic bag inside a bathroom of an Etihad plane on Saturday night after it landed at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia. The flight had taken off from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The woman, who has been identified only as Hani, was arrested after the gruesome discovery was made. It is not yet known whether the baby was stillborn or alive. Authorities believe Hani secretly gave birth to the baby while on the plane, which was originally diverted to Bangkok after the mother started bleeding.

"The woman was in economy class but then laid on a business-class seat with an oxygen mask. The captain then announced we should divert to Bangkok," said Francesco Calore, an Etihad Airways crew member.

According to Business Insider, Hani had worked as a domestic worker in Abu Dhabi for the past four years. It's reported that she has a husband and children in Cianjur, Indonesia, but Hani said that the child was the product of a sexual relationship with her employer in Abu Dhabi.

The investigation is ongoing. It is unclear if Hani has made additional statements at this time.

As Newsweek shared, there are some 5 million Indonesian citizens who work abroad. About 70 percent of them are domestic helpers. According to the Independent, there are approximately 300,000 domestic workers in the Emirates, and nearly half of them are women.
