Robert De Niro The Latest Trump Critic To Be Sent Suspicious Package In The Mail

A package containing a possible explosive device was sent to the actor at the Tribeca building that houses his production company and restaurant.

Robert De Niro received a suspicious package in the mail this week, making him the latest Trump critic to have been targeted in what appears to be a series of coordinated attacks.

Police received a call at around 4 a.m. Thursday morning reporting a suspicious package addressed to De Niro and delivered to a building in New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood that houses the actor’s production company, Tribeca Enterprises, as well as his restaurant, Tribeca Grill, CNN reports. Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, former president Barack Obama, former CIA Director John Brennan, and other public figures — many of whom are Democrats who have openly criticized Trump — have received crude explosive devices in the mail this week, prompting an FBI investigation, the Associated Press reports.

The package De Niro received is similar in appearance to the packages other high-profile Trump critics received this week, and X-rays of its contents revealed that it contained a similar suspicious device, according to CNN. De Niro’s package also listed Democratic U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida as the return address, just as the other packages did, according to the outlet.

Authorities have since transported the package to a “secure facility” located in the Bronx, New York Police Department Commissioner James O’Neill said in a tweet early Thursday morning.

“The most highly-trained experts in the world are investigating today’s suspicious package in #TriBeCa — & the item is now en route to a secure facility in the #Bronx,” he wrote. “Together with our partners @NewYorkFBI, @ATFNewYork, @nyspolice & more, @NYPDCT WILL find whoever is responsible.”

John Miller, head of intelligence and counterterrorism at the New York Police Department, confirmed this week that the packages seem to have all been sent by the same individual or group, according to the Associated Press.

Trump has gone on record denouncing the actions of the person or group responsible, calling the situation “despicable” during a remarks Wednesday.

“In these times, we have to unify, we have to come together and send one very clear, strong, unmistakable message that acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America,” he said.

De Niro has been outspoken in his criticism of Trump, famously stating “f--k Trump” during the Tony Awards earlier this year.
