A married anatomy and physiology high school teacher, who flashed a wide smile in her 2017 mugshot after being accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student, pleaded guilty to the allegations on Thursday.

Sarah Madden Fowlkes, 28, submitted a plea deal agreement on Thursday and if a judge accepts it, she would serve four years deferred adjudication and pay a fine, according to Fox 29 in San Antonio.

She would also be forced to give up her teacher’s license. She previously taught at Lockhart High School in Lockhart, Texas. Before that, she was a teacher at Plum Creek Elementary School in the same town, where she taught third and fourth graders, FOX 29 reported.

Last year, Fowlkes was arrested and suspended from her teaching position at Lockhart High School after the school was tipped off that she had an improper relationship with a 17-year-old male student. Police accused Fowlkes of engaging inappropriately with the student, both in person and by text message, according to KTXS in Abilene, Texas. They also accused Fowlkes of engaging in sexual contact with the student.

She was arrested and she smiled for her mugshot. She was bonded out the same day, KXAN in Austin reported

Her lawyer, Jason Nassour claimed at the time that her smile was an indication of her innocence.

“This isn’t a guilty person sitting there like they just got caught,” he told NBC DFW at the time. “When everything’s fleshed out, it won’t be as it appears.”

He also claimed that she was arrested on the statement of “a 17-year-old kid with no corroborating evidence,” according to that report. She was reportedly married at the time, according to the New York Post.
