A judge has given jail time to a father convicted of injuring his 2-month old daughter by rubbing hot sauce

and cayenne pepper in her eyes and mouth.

Shawn Michael Foltz, 42, of Moorhead, Minnesota was given 30 months behind bars during a sentencing hearing held on Wednesday in Clay County District Court, WDAY in Fargo, North Dakota reported.

Last year, Foltz was arrested for rubbing the irritatants on his daughter's eyes, mouth and nose before initially blaming the actions on his 3-year-old son. Foltz also blocked the baby's airwaves until she turned blue, hit her a wooden spoon, sprayed hot water in her face, snapped her in the eyes with a towel, and threw firecrackers at her, according to court records.

This June, Foltz pleaded guilty to third-degree felony assault of a victim under the age of 4.

Before he was sentenced on Wednesday, his now-ex-wife Belinda Bailer spoke to the courtroom.

"I felt like I did not know the man I was married to," she said, WDAY reported. She said the victim is now healthy but that she doesn’t know how she will explain her father’s actions to her. Bailer added that her now 4-year-old son is traumatized from witnessing Foltz's actions. She said he now sees a therapist.

Foltz is required to spend at least 20 months in prison. When he was arrested, Foltz reportedly told police he’d often fantasize about ways to injure his daughter while he was at work, according to KFGO, a radio station which covers the Fargo and Moorehead areas. He told police he was annoyed by the baby's crying.
