Trump’s Lawyer Says He Paid Stormy Daniels $130,000 And Was Never Reimbursed
Michael D. Cohen said he paid her with his own money.
On Tuesday, Michael D. Cohen, President Trump’s longtime lawyer, revealed that it was he who allegedly paid $130,000 out of his own pocket to adult film star “Stormy Daniels,” who has been accused of having an affair with Trump.
“Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms. Clifford, and neither reimbursed me for the payment, either directly or indirectly,” Cohen said in a statement. “The payment to Ms. Clifford was lawful, and was not a campaign contribution or a campaign expenditure by anyone.”
It’s not clear if Trump was made aware of the payment. According to the report, Cohen said in the past that Trump has denied an affair with Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford. In exchange for the $130,000, a nondisclosure agreement was allegedly signed. The alleged sexual experience happened in July 2006, according to the New York Daily News. At that time, Trump was married to Melania, who had just given birth to their son Barron.
According to The Associated Press, Clifford believes she is now allowed to talk freely about the alleged affair, as Cohen invalidated the nondisclosure agreement by speaking with the press.
“Everything is off now, and Stormy is going to tell her story,” said Clifford's manager, Gina Rodriguez.
Both Trump and Clifford denied that any such encounter ever took place.
“President Trump once again vehemently denies any such occurrence as has Ms. Daniels,” Cohen said in a statement in January. A White House official previously told The Wall Street Journal that “these are old, recycled reports, which were published and strongly denied prior to the election.”
Through Cohen, Clifford also put out a previous statement in January, according to the New York Times, saying, “Rumors that I have received hush money from Donald Trump are completely false.”
