Martinis & Murder Cocktail Recipe: Fallen Ballerina

Pair this raspberry vodka cocktail with episode 87, “The Butcher Chef.”

Listeners know that Matt the Bartender needs all the help he can get, so we tried out Shaker & Spoon, a subscription service that sends you everything you need to make super-fancy cocktails (minus the booze). We tried out the recent vodka box, which includes three recipes, and enough ingredients to make four drinks from each recipe. The Fallen Ballerina, a refreshing cocktail that gets some depth from infusing the vodka with tea, was a favorite.

Here’s how to make it:

1 ½ ounce tea-infused vodka*
1 ounce raspberry-honey oleo saccharum syrup (you can order some here)
¾ ounce lemon juice
1 to 2 ounces of sparkling water
1 hand-cut lemon peel

* To infuse the vodka, put a flavored black tea bag, like Republic of Tea Ginger Peach, into the vodka and let it sit for about 30 minutes, then squeeze and remove.


Add the infused vodka, syrup and juice to a shaker. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously until it is ice cold and shows frost on the outside (15-30 seconds).
Strain the contents into a double rocks glass with fresh ice cubes. (Or go without ice Matt-the-Bartender style).
Top with sparkling water, and then wring the lemon peel above the glass to release the citrus oil and place it in the drink.


Sip on the drink while listening to the case of Angela Stoldt, who killed her neighbor and wasn't sure of how to dispose of his body.
