Grisly Clues Found In Woods After Disappearance Of 5-Months Pregnant Single Mom

Kimberlyn Scott hadn’t heard from her daughter in more than 24 hours, and she was starting to worry.

Carly “Charli” Scott, 27, was five months pregnant and single. She and the child’s father had broken up a year before, according to “Relentless With Kate Snow” on Oxygen. But by all accounts, Scott was thriving — thrilled at the prospect of raising her son, Joshua, at her home in Maui, Hawaii.

“She was happy. She was getting excited,” friend Adam Gaines told producers.

The last time Gaines saw Scott, he went with her to the doctor to get her first ultrasound. Gaines and his wife could not have children, so the three of them of them had been planning on raising the child together.

Scott’s life was going well. It seemed incredibly unlikely that she would just run off on her own.

But when Scott’s family reached out to authorities, local police were frustratingly slow to respond, Kimberlyn told producers. Concerned for her daughter’s safety, she began investigating this case on her own, starting with the last person who had seen her: the father of Scott’s child, Steven Capobianco.

Capobianco and Scott had a complicated relationship.

He told investigators questioning him that he had two girlfriends after he and Scott broke up, according to KHON 2 News, a local news outlet. But after an unhappy end to one of those relationships, Capobianco went back to Scott, and they got very drunk together at a local bar.

“[We] started talking, and then I woke up in her house the next day and thought, ‘Aw, crap,’” he told investigators. “And then I get a call a couple months later like, ‘Yeah, Charli’s got your baby.’”

Capobianco went with Scott to a Planned Parenthood clinic to schedule an abortion, according to The Maui News. After that meeting, however, Scott apparently had second thoughts — and in Dec. 2013, she broke the news to her family that she was pregnant.

Scott’s family was excited for her, according to The Maui News. Her half-sister Fiona Wais said she texted Capobianco to see whether he knew Scott was pregnant. He replied, “I thought she had taken care of it.”

When Wais didn’t respond, Capobianco called her.

“I told him she had chosen obviously to keep the child, and she wanted to be a mother,” Wais testified. “From there on, it was a one-sided conversation. He was kind of nervous or panicked-sounding.”

The day before Scott’s disappearance on Feb. 9, 2014, Capobianco said his truck broke down in a remote part of Maui’s Hana Highway, according to local outlet Maui Now. He hitchhiked home in the dark, then texted Scott the next morning asking if she would help him tow it. That evening, around 8:30 p.m., she met him and drove him to his truck.

That was the last time anyone ever saw Scott.

At Kimberlyn’s urging, family and neighbors joined police in the search for Charli Scott. Days later, near the site of her cellphone’s last ping, they discovered ghastly evidence of a murder.

Investigators found five fingernails, two jawbone fragments matching Scott’s dental records, a tongue piercing with flesh still attached, skin fragments, clumps of Scott’s red hair and a maggot-infested blanket, according to The Maui News.

Perhaps most chilling of all was the black maternity skirt Scott was wearing at the time. Below the waistband, where Scott’s pregnancy bump would have been, the skirt appeared to have been punctured numerous times with a sharp object. Authorities surmised that Scott and her unborn baby had been stabbed more than 20 times, according to The Maui News.
