Many politicians are scrambling for words to soothe their constituents in response to the school shooting that occurred in Florida that left 17 dead on Valentine’s Day.
Some politicians are more unfiltered in their responses.
During an interview with Talk 1300 Radio Wednesday, New York GOP Congresswoman Claudia Tenney made a claim that a common trend with mass murderers is that they happen to be Democrats.
The congresswoman told radio host Fred Dickler that responsible gun owners are now targets even though they statistically don’t commit much crime, according to The Washington Post.
Dicker pushed for a response offering that most gun crimes take place in cities involving minorities.
“Obviously there’s a lot of politics in it,” she said. “It’s interesting that so many of these people that commit the mass murders end up being Democrats… but the media doesn’t talk about that either.”
The congresswoman didn’t provide any evidence to back up her claim.
Tenney was criticized for her remarks. Democratic state Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi, who is opposing her in the election this fall, Tweeted: “First, @RepTenney said Democrats are un-American. Now this. This toxic rhetoric is shameful and a new low even for Ms. Tenney. Inserting politics into a national tragedy is beyond the pale & disgusting. She should apologize now to spare our region any more national embarrassment.”
Wednesday night Tenney responded to the criticism she received when pressed by CNN.
“I am fed up with the media and liberals attempting to politicize tragedies and demonize law-abiding gun owners and conservative Americans every time there is a horrible tragedy,” she said. “I will continue to stand up for law-abiding citizens who are smeared by anti-gun liberal elitists.”
Tenney’s remarks are reminiscent of ones made in 2015 by musician Ted Nugent. He posted a list of mass shootings to his public Facebook page claiming that most mass shooters are Democrats. Nugent’s post states the solution to gun violence would be never to arm Democrats.
Rep. Claudia Tenney is up for reelection this year.
