Keanu Reeves To Star In Martin Scorcese Hulu Series About 19th Century Serial Killer H.H. Holmes
A new Hulu series produced by Martin Scorcese and Leonardo DeCaprio will star Keanu Reeves as 1893 Chicago World's Fair architect Daniel H. Burnham, in a dramatization of the acts of serial killer H.H. Holmes, who preyed upon people during the event.
Keanu Reeves will be starring in an upcoming Hulu drama series, which draws from the real-life serial killer H.H. Holmes.
The series, entitled “The Devil in the White City” was announced earlier this year. Reeves just recently officially signed on to play architect Daniel H. Burnham after months of discussion, Deadline reported this week. It marks the “Matrix” actor’s first television role, and he will also executively produce the series.
The series — which is also executively produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese — is based on Erik Larson’s 2003 book “The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America.” The New York Times bestselling book is known for its tale of how the serial killer lured his victims to their death using the magic of 1893 World's Fair in Chicago.
“The Devil in the White City” is also about how the fates of two men, visionary fair architect Burnham and the serial killer Holmes, were forever linked by the World's Fair.
Burnham designed the buildings used at the world's fair, which are regarded as ahead of their time.
H.H. Holmes was the pseudonym of physician Herman Webster Mudgett, who confessed to 27 murders in Chicago between 1888 and 1894. Some believe he could have killed as many as 200 people after creating a house of horrors dubbed the "Murder Castle" in a building he owned, according to Biography.
The three-story, block-long building included rooms that had gas jets to asphyxiate victims. There were also trapdoors and chutes so that he could move the bodies down to the basement and dispose of them in a kiln. An undetermined number of people were killed in the building when he opened it up as a hotel during the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, according to The Associated Press.
DiCaprio bought the film rights to the book in 2010 and previously attempted to turn it into a feature film directed by Scorsese, according to Deadline.
The eight-episode series is expected to hit Hulu in 2024.
