We've probably all spent every single penny we have on gifts for ourselves and our families on Black Friday — but today is Giving Tuesday, so it's time to shake those last coins out of your pocket and get giving. Seeing our current political climate and the impending doom our country faces in the very near future under a Donald Trump presidency, we've lined up some charities and reputable organizations who could really use your help right now. Check them out, below!
1. Planned Parenthood
Even if you're not pro-choice, Planned Parenthood is an invaluable organization that offers "comprehensive reproductive and complementary health care services in settings which preserve and protect the essential privacy and rights of each individual." Under Trump, there's a chance this organization will lose all of it's federal funding due to right-wing religious extremist opposition to abortion (even though, according to a PP fact sheet, only "three percent of all Planned Parenthood health services are abortion services"). Make sure Planned Parenthood can still provide important care by donating to them over here.
2. The American Civil Liberties Union
Are you queer, a woman, or a person of color who is scared of losing your civil liberties? Donate to the ACLU, who work tirelessly to legally defend your equality and constitutional rights. More specifically: "The American Civil Liberties Union is our nation's guardian of liberty, working daily in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country."
3. The Trevor Project
Following the election of Donald Trump, calls to LGBTQ crisis hotlines increased up to five times their usual volume, with many afraid of the future under such a staunchly anti-gay regime. The Trevor Project "is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) young people ages 13-24." You can donate to them over here.
4. The International Rescue Comittee
The IRC deals with a handful of important issues accross the globe by responding to "the world's worst humanitarian crises, helping to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster." Their work with refugees is particularly salient at the time, given our incoming administration's hostility towards displaced foreigners. Donate to the IRC to "help people whose lives and livlihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future."
5. The ASPCA
Not every donation needs to be a political statement, especially when there are adorable doggos and kitters that need your help. The ASPCA's mission is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States," which includes everything from fighting in the legal system on behalf of animals to finding and providing housing for homeless pets. Make a donation on behalf of your favorite pupper over here.
