Charlie Murphy, the older brother of actor Eddie Murphy, has died. The 57-year-old comedian, who's perhaps known best for his much-loved contributions to The Chappelle Show, passed away after a battle with leukemia.
Murphy's manager told TMZ that Murphy passed on Wednesday morning at an NYC hospital. Murphy had been undergoing chemotherapy and friends and family say he looked to be getting better.
"He was doing well, but he contracted pneumonia and that's what took him out. His body wasn't strong enough to fight the infection. It was very sudden," Murphy's cousin Richard Murphy told the New York Daily News.
"He was definitely looking forward to doing bigger, better things but unfortunately he was called home," he continued.
Murphy's family issued a statement on the devastating loss.
"Our hearts are heavy with the loss today of our son, brother, father, uncle, and friend Charlie," the statement reads. "Charlie filled our family with love and laughter, and there won't be a day that goes by that his presence will not be missed. Thank you for the outpouring of condolences and prayers. We respectfully ask for privacy during this time of great loss for all of us."
