It's hard to believe that black women still have to deal with hair discrimination in the year 2017, but unfortunately, that's the reality we live in. Not even celebs like Gabrielle Union are immune to the BS.
In a new interview with Byrdie, the actress/author opened up about an experience she had with Hollywood producers and their negative views of traditionally black hairstyles, Revelist reports. For the particular role, Union wanted her character to wear her hair in twists, but because producers wanted Union's character to be "sophisticated," they vetoed the idea.
"I was doing a project and with the character the producers were coming up with what they wanted to do for her hair," she explained. "And they were like, 'She's beautiful, sophisticated, and professional.' I was like, 'Well, I want to wear braids.' And and they were like, 'Well, I mean, she's beautiful, sophisticated, and corporate America.'"
"I responded, 'Yes, and specifically I want twists.' And they went on to say, 'We just really want her to look more polished.' I said, 'You all really don't understand what are we talking about here?' she continued.
Union didn't give any further details on the incident, so we'll probably never find out if the producers finally saw the light, but good for Gabby for standing up and speaking out, regardless.
"We should embrace all of us on our hair journeys, wherever they take us," she added later. "Not to quote Martin Luther King Jr., but let the content of someone's character actually determine how you treat them, not how they wear their hair."
Preach it, Gabby.
