Don't sleep on Selena Gomez. She's about to take over the world. And no, I'm not talking about her latest album, Revival (though, credit where credit's due: it did debut at number 1 on the Billboard charts). Selena's latest venture is executive producing.
According to a Variety exclusive, Selena Gomez is one of three executive producers working to bring bestselling YA novel 13 Reasons Why to small screens everywhere. The book centers around the aftermath of high school student Hannah Baker's suicide, and the adaptation will be a 13-episode Netflix series. Selena will not be starring in the show.
This may seem like an unexpected move for Selena, who seems to have been focusing more on her music lately, but it really isn't. A return to TV only makes sense for the former Disney star, who got her start starring in the Disney Channel original series Wizards of Waverly Place. Since then she's branched out into movies, music, and more TV (and dating Justin Bieber, but we're not going to talk about that).
The girl has got longevity, and it's specifically because she isn't afraid to keep branching out. While some would have stopped trying to beef up their resume after getting a few movies and hit singles under their belt, Selena has always stored her eggs in a few different baskets. She has her own production company and perfume, she just wrapped four films, and her second solo album is doing really well. And remember her tween clothing line, Dream Out Loud, at Kmart? That's how you build an Empire. Just look at Mary-Kate and Ashley. It's not easy to thrive as a former Disney star, but it looks like Selena's got this thing on lock.
