Style is everything in hip-hop and what you wear--and more importantly, how you rock it-- is what makes you fresh. Fresh Dressed (June 26 release) chronicles the history of urban fashion from the streets of the South Bronx in New York City to high-fashion runways in Paris, Milan and beyond. Director Sacha Jenkins shows how the music on the block influenced dope looks like oversized pants and fat-laced sneakers and highlights important designers like Dapper Dan, Karl Kani and Sean John who have indelibly affected how we dress. Fresh Dressed features interviews with artists and sartorial influencers including Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Swizz Beatz, André Leon Talley, A$AP Rocky and Nas (who also serves as an executive producer).
Last week, Fresh Dressed celebrated its premiere in New York City with a red carpet event for celebrities, hip-hop heads and industry insiders. The hot ticket drew a long line outside of the School of Visual Arts theatre in Chelsea. One of the best parts of being a journalist is skipping lines like this. I breezed in and found myself mistakenly standing in front of Nas in a separate VIP area. The handsome rapper was a vision in all white—rocking a MCM baseball cap and thick gold rope chain. Fan girl disclaimer: Nas is my favorite rapper and I’ve had a crush on him since I was 12. Needless to say, once we rocked eyes, I was a little speechless and mesmerized.
Once I caught my composure and was able to speak again—hold on, let me think about Nas for one more second-- I hung out by the step and repeat where rappers like Pusha T and Jadakiss stopped to pose for photos. I’ve interviewed Pusha (or Terrence as I like to call him) several times and he’s a genuinely cool guy that’s always fun to see off-duty. There were plenty of good sightings for hip-hop heads as The Alchemist (who I punched in the stomach because that’s how I greet producers I like) and Harlem rapper on-the-come-up Dave East (Ladies, look him up. He’s very easy on the eyes) were in the house too. One strange but kind of cool sighting was Karrueche Tran. Chris Brown’s famous former flame wore an oversized orange jacket and heels. She appeared in high spirits, sporting an effortless glow that usually comes from being single and fabulous. Go on, Kae!
