Selena Gomez announced in late August that she’d be taking a break to deal with her health. Gomez was diagnosed with lupus about a year ago, an autoimmune disease that can be extremely painful and exhausting. She hasn’t really been using social media since either, even on her wildly popular Instagram account. So, it was exciting to see her looking good and healthy on Sunday at the American Music Awards.
Gomez won the Pop Rock Female award, and gave an inspiring speech about her connection to her fans and her health, saying in part, “It's safe to say most of you know a lot of my life, whether I liked it or not. I had to stop because I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside. I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down but I kept to too much together to where I would let myself down."
She continued, “I don't want to see your bodies on Instagram, I want to see what's in here. I'm not trying to get validation nor do I need it anymore. All I can say, from the bottom of my heart, is I am so grateful I have the opportunity to share what I love every single day with people that I love. I have to say thank you so much to my fans, because you guys are so damn loyal and I don't know what I did to deserve you. If you are broken, you don't have to stay broken. If you respect me or not, that's one thing you should know about me, I care about people and thank you so much for this.”
A pop star doesn’t need validation anymore? Well, she still hasn’t updated her Instagram, so that may very well be true.
