Shakira Blasted For Selling Tour Necklace With Nazi-Like Imagery

The necklace has been pulled from the website of the singer, who is currently on her El Dorado World Tour.

Shakira faced some hate online this week after inadvertently selling merchandise with Nazi-like imagery on her online shop.

The “La Tortura” singer is currently in the midst of her El Dorado World Tour, and has plenty of merch for sale, but one item in particular is raising a few eyebrows online: a necklace with a design that strongly resembles the Black Sun, a symbol designed by Nazis, German outlet Bento reports. The hate symbol is made up of three crossed swastikas. Also known as the sunwheel, the symbol was later adopted by Neo-Nazis, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

As numerous Twitter users pointed out in side-by-side comparison photos, the Black Sun symbol and the symbol on the necklace being sold on Shakira’s site are strikingly similar.

Some fans blasted the singer for using the imagery in her merchandise.

“A fascist symbol as a necklace for your world tour? Are you f***ing serious @shakira,” one Twitter user wrote.

Live Nation, the company that produces Shakira’s tour, took responsibility for the mix-up in a series of tweets on Thursday, explaining that the necklace was inspired by “pre-Colombian imagery” and announcing that the item will no longer be for sale.

“The necklace Live Nation designed for Shakira’s El Dorado World Tour was based on Pre-Colombian imagery,” read their statement. “However, some fans have expressed concern that the design bears an unintentional resemblance to Neo-Nazi imagery. We sincerely apologize for this inadvertent similarity and have permanently pulled the item from the tour collection.”

Some on social media took the tour production company to task for their mistake.

“wow ! you guys really do good research before putting out stuff, sadly everyone blames the artist as if they design the merch. can you guys care a little more about your artist's reputation?” one critic wrote.

Shakira has yet to comment.
