As an official Old Person™, I'm not quite sure what a YouTube celebrity actually does. But if kids becoming famous on the internet for being brave queer warriors is a thing nowadays, that sounds fine to me!
Transgender YouTube beauty guru Gigi Gorgeous became a breakout star amongst an endless sea of social media celebrities by openly and honestly sharing her heartwrenching story with the entire Internet — and she schooled the children in makeup along the way. Now, Gigi is the subject of a new documentary directed by two-time Academy Award winner Barbara Kopple. This Is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous shares the tale of our eponymous heroine's coming out and transition.
"My camera became my therapist and YouTube became my diary," says Gorgeous, who had tracked her transition on her own channel for years, amassing devoted followers and admirers alike. The new film depicts Gigi's family's journey to acceptance through adversity.
Here's the official synopsis for the doc, via Popcrush: "Are there any limits to your love for your family? This is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous portrays the intimate journey of Gigi Lazzarato, a fearless young woman who began life as Gregory Lazzarato, posting beauty and fashion videos to YouTube from his bedroom, only to later come out as a transgender female to an audience of millions. Directed by two-time Oscar® award winner Barbara Kopple, the film provides a raw and revealing look into a life that never compromises happiness, and spotlights a family’s unwavering and unconditional love for a child."
The film is set to debut on February 8 as a YouTube Red original movie. It will have a limited theatrical release starting on February 3rd.
