Students at Appalachian State University have been targeted by a white supremacist group.
Students were greeted by a banner hung by a supremacist group on a pedestrian bridge on campus. "A New Dawn is Breaking. Rise and Get Active. Identity Evropa,” the banner said.
Witnesses posted the banner on social media:
As USA Today shares, Identity Evropa is “a generation of awakened Europeans who have discovered that we are part of the great peoples, history, and civilization that flowed from the European continent." Its website explains, "We oppose those who would defame our history and rich cultural heritage.”
In an email from the university’s chancellor, Sheri N. Everts, two white men posted the banner on August 21 at around 8 pm. Twenty minutes later, two people took the banner down.
University police are not certain if the banner came from someone affiliated with the North Carolina school.
Ironically, Appalachian State started a #NoHateAppState campaign just days before the incident to specifically curb hate.
This isn't the first time that the white supremacist group Identity Evropa has been active on campuses. Last year, offensive messages posted at the University of Massachusetts were claimed by the group.
