Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina's Based on a True Story characters are living every true-crime fan's dream — sort of.

In the trailer for the Peacock series, expectant mom Ava (Cuoco) and former pro tennis player Nathan Bartlett (Messina) come up with the idea to launch a true-crime podcast after they find themselves in close proximity to a serial killer who has been dubbed the "West Side Ripper."

The idea comes at the perfect time for the pair, who are expecting their first child in the expensive city of Los Angeles. "We can't pay any of our bills, you just lost your job, we have a baby on the way — so tell me, how are we going to get by?" Ava asks.

With this predicament in mind, they decide to move forward with their true crime podcast. And besides, "no one ever went broke betting on America's obsession with murder," Ava points out.

But Ava's idea to invite the killer to join their podcast puts them in danger as they find themselves at the center of a murder investigation. As police begin to question their knowledge of the tape, Ava and Nathan have to ask themselves how far they're willing to go for success. Will they start their family from behind bars or succeed in their mission to catch a killer?

Craig Rosenberg, who serves as showrunner, creator, executive producer and writer on the show, said in a statement that he was inspired to write Based on a True Story after observing America's true crime obsession over the years.

"Podcasts, documentaries, fictional shows based on true stories — they dominate the culture. Murderers have become celebrities and celebrities have become murderers which inspired me to create this show," Rosenberg said.

To find out if Ava and Nathan succeed in their endeavors, watch all eight episodes of Based on a True Story when they premiere on Peacock June 8.
