The new Peacock documentary Pathological: The Lies of Joran van der Sloot is taking a deeper look at the man who killed Natalee Holloway and Stephany Flores.

For years, mystery shrouded the 2005 disappearance of Holloway, a high school senior vacationing in Aruba. The investigation into the young American's whereabouts and presumed death would set off a series of events involving Joran van der Sloot, a suspect in the case.

As years passed by, van der Sloot would become entangled in further criminal investigations, including the murder of Peruvian woman Stephany Flores. He'd go on to be convicted of Flores' murder in Peru and extortion and wire fraud in the U.S., the latter of which led to his confession to the murder of Holloway.

Why is Joran van der Sloot in Peru?

The Dutch national is currently incarcerated in a maximum security prison located in Piedras Gordas, Peru, where he is serving a 28-year prison sentence for the 2010 murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores.

While van der Sloot pleaded guilty to extortion and wire fraud in the United States and received a 20-year sentence in 2023, part of his plea agreement stated that the sentence is to be served concurrently with his sentence in Peru. If van der Sloot completes his 28-year sentence in Peru early, he will return to the U.S. to complete his 20-year sentence, according to NBC News.

While van der Sloot has confessed to the killing of Holloway, the statute of limitations for murder in Aruba is 12 years. As such, van der Sloot will likely not face charges, per CNN.

When is Joran van der Sloot's release date?

Van der Sloot began serving his 28-year sentence in 2012 but was sentenced to an additional 18 years after he was convicted of trafficking cocaine into prison in 2021. However, under Peruvian law, prison sentences are not to exceed 35 years (unless given a life sentence), according to van der Sloot's sentencing memorandum. As such, van der Sloot can be expected to be released from prison on June 10, 2045.

Though he is expected to be released in 2045, van der Sloot will be up for parole after half his sentence is served, NBC News reported. He may also receive credit for good behavior.

How did Joran van der Sloot father a child in prison?

The prison system in Peru is more lenient in comparison to American prisons. Family members and merchants may enter the facility during the day, allowing for prisoners to buy goods and meet with visitors. This is how van der Sloot met his now ex-wife Leidy Figueroa at the Miguel Castro Castro Prison, in November 2010.

Figueroa eventually became pregnant during a visit and they later wed in July 2014, when Figueroa was seven months pregnant. Figueroa gave birth to a girl, named Dushy after van der Sloot's grandmother, in September 2014, according to CBS News

In early 2023, van der Sloot's lawyer told the Daily Mail that the prisoner was purportedly seeking a divorce from Figueroa.

All of this and more is explored in further detail in the Peacock documentary Pathological: The Lies of Joran van der Sloot. The documentary features "rare interviews and new insights" into the deaths of Holloway and Flores, whose respective family members and friends reflect on how the cases changed their lives.

Pathological: The Lies of Joran van der Sloot is streaming now on Peacock.
